Demonstration: Glass Bulb Snowmen with String Light Entrails

Wayne’s topic: turning wooden bases for glass bulb snowmen illuminated with string lights — a perfect holiday project.

Wayne provided how-to handouts for all present. Remaining copies will be available in the cabinet at the Wheatly shop where SRWT items are stored.

In a classy move, Wayne donated a complete snowman kit to the newest SRWT member. Congratulations, John!

Fixturing

Wayne shared the custom fixtures and jigs he has developed over his years of woodturning.

Turning the Base

Wayne mounted a blank on the lathe to begin turning the snowman base.

On with the turning

He made a dovetailed mortise in the bottom of the base. The dovetail helps contain the lead-in wire for the string lights and ensures there is enough room inside for the light switch. After reverse chucking the base, Wayne shaped the perimeter and created a scoop to seat the glass bulb, along with an interior mortise to accept the bulb’s tenon.
